Optometric physicians support charities

Cannon EyeCare in Seattle is pleased to report that our optometric physicians support local charities. Our little company is made of just two doctors (Drs. Mark and Miranda Cannon), yet since opening our practice in 2014 we have supported a number local charities. We also want to take a moment to applaud other optometrists and local Seattle-metro businesses that give to charity.

Optometric physicians are known to be a generous group as a whole. Some major optometry-related charities include Optometry Giving Sight and the American Optometric Association’s AOA Foundation charity called Optometry Cares. Others donate their time an expertise for mission trips like VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity) or Infant-See (free eye exams for babies performed by pediatric optometrists).

Our charitable goals match the old saying, think globally, act locally. Cannon EyeCare has donated funds or free eye exams (for charity auction fundraisers) to:

Sight Connection (they connect people with vision impairment to services and community)
BikeWorks (they build sustainable communities by educating youth and promoting bicycling)
Giddens School (a K-5th grade school in the Central District that nourishes diversity, sense of self, and a love of learning)
The ‘Save KPLU’ fund (This local NPR and Jazz & Blues radio station was recently saved from a sale to a competing station by the generous donations of $7million by local businesses and community members).
Of all our charity work we have done thus far, we are most excited to have helped the Save KPLU campaign meet it’s fundraising goals. This Puget Sound area NPR station plays some of the best jazz and blues music around, in addition to local news reporting for NPR. It is currently run as a community service of Pacific Lutheran University, but they decided to get out of the radio business and sell the station in 2016.

Originally slated to be sold to a competitor and turned into a music-only station, the community stepped up and managed to raise $7million dollars to purchase the station a month ahead of the June 30 deadline. Cannon EyeCare gave until it hurt, with two sizable donations, as we believe local news, jazz, and blues programming improves the quality of life for our community. We applaud the tens of thousands of individual and business donors that joined us in this heroic effort.
